When Life Gets Hard
Updated: Dec 7, 2018
What do we do when life gets hard? I mean really hard like the loss of our job...the death of someone we love...or cancer. Sooner or later, all of us find ourselves in a really tough situation. What do we do in these times? Where do we turn? The bible helps us here.
The first thing we need to do is realize that these things are bound to happen (John 16:33), but it's the enemy that comes to steal, kill, and destroy, not God (John 10:10). We can't blame God for the bad things that happen. We live in a fallen world. It's satan who wants to attack us and keep us from having a relationship with God.
The second thing I think we need to do is remember we have a Savior who understands what we're going through. Hebrews 4:15 says we have a high priest that can sympathize with our weaknesses. Jesus walked on this earth as a human, and He knew what it was to experience extreme situations in life. In fact, He spent His brief life on this earth knowing He was going to die one of the most cruel deaths known to man. If anyone knows about pain and suffering, it's Him.
The third thing we need to do is realize how much God loves us and wants us to turn to Him. Psalm 46:1-3 says "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble". We need to lean on Jesus and Romans 8:28 which says "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose". And 1 Peter 5:7 tells us to cast all our anxiety on Him because He cares for us.
We can't keep bad things from happening in our lives, but we can turn to a Father who loves us and feels what we feel. If we do that, He'll follow through on his promise. And we'll find that even through terrible situations, God is able make some good come of it. And one last thought...even though we know there will be trouble in this world, if we are a follower of Christ, there won't be trouble in the next. This life may seem long, but it will be the blink of an eye compared to eternity...an eternity where there is no pain or sorrow.
